The Illahee Institute is the consulting and research branch of Illahee. Good information and analysis are critical to responsible environmental stewardship. The Illahee Institute provides balanced and accessible analysis to business, government, academic, and non-profit sectors. Our project-oriented research has resulted in salmon management and stock status articles in the journal Fisheries, reports on the status of the Willamette River, and a review of forest health in Oregon's Coast Range.

Illahee offers a variety of skills and experience that serve the scientific and professional community, including:

  • Watershed Assessment
  • Sustainability Indicators
  • Landscape History
  • Environmental Reviews
  • Vegetation Assessmennt
  • Wetland Delineations
  • Wildlife Assessment
  • Environmental Assessments
  • City, County, State and Federal Permit Assistance
  • Bioregional Resource Assessment

Illahee staff has worked with numerous conservation organizations, community groups, government agencies, and natural resource businesses to craft mutually beneficial forest, fisheries, and watershed partnerships.

Past experience includes the development of a web-based conservation information system and news service, assessment of the status of salmon for western North America, and coordination of several watershed assessments.

Wildlife experience ranges from endangered Hawaiian forest birds, to Andean condors, peregrine falcons, Humboldt penguins and Sechura foxes in Peru, salamanders in the Pacific NW, and Pacific salmon throughout their range.

We have also investigated forest succession, effects of El Nino on desert vegetation in South America, long-term (10,000 years) forest change in central New England, the Willamette valley, and the Cascades, and watershed dynamics in the Pacific Northwest.

Dr. Schoonmaker, who earned a Ph.D. in biology from Harvard University, leads Illahee's research projects. Currently, Peter holds academic positions at Portland State University, Linfield College, and Oregon State University.
